Support System

Identify Your Support System

Having a strong support system in place is critical in achieving weight management success.

A negative environment can quickly derail your weight loss and weight management efforts.  Make sure that you have a friend, family member, support group member and/or trained professional who will be there to support you during the thick and thin of your weight loss journey.

According to the Mayo Clinic,  "One study found that people who had the support of friends were less likely to drop out of a weight-control program and more likely to maintain their weight loss over a six-month period than were people without such support."  Other research has shown that individuals who meet regularly with a dietitian or who attend groups like Weight Watchers have a better chance at keeping their weight loss in check.

Support can come in many different shapes and sizes.

  • Emotional support and sharing, which can come from a family member, friend, coach, or support group can help you stay motivated and on-track during your peaks and valleys.
  • Encouragement and motivation can come from an exercise or diet buddy.
  • A trained professional can act as a coach and mentor.
  • Support can even come in the form of a child care provider to help with children so that you can exercise, for example.
It is important for you to identify the type of support structure that you think you will need in order to be successful.
