Commit to Patience

Patience is the Key to Paradise - Turkish Proverb

Have you been gaining and losing weight for years?

Have your tried multiple diets with disappointing results?

Do you feel totally frustrated and confused?

Regardless of your current situation, it took years to get to where you are today.  Likewise, it will take  time, perseverance, and courage to achieve your weight management goals.  If you choose to walk this path, you are beginning a journey - a lifelong journey.  You do not graduate from obesity.  You may be "reduced obese", but you will always remember what it felt like to be overweight.

At this point you may feel as if you have tried everything to lose weight.  You may have even had, or are considering, bariatric/weight loss surgery.  Please know that you are also very brave.  Whether you have had surgery or not, it takes a lot of courage to continue to deal with a weight issue.  If you feel embarrassed and ashamed for having gained weight, and you feel like no one understands, you are not alone.  No matter where you are now, your situation can be bettered!  Be patient. You body has been through a lot!

You CAN Become Patient!

Having patience is often very difficult.  Patience is a character trait that for many people does not come easily.  Our modern day society has conditioned us to want what we want, when we want it.  Having patience requires awareness and continuous nurturing.  You may need to engage "mind over matter" to achieve it.  Remember that practice makes perfect.  The more you practice patience in your life, the quicker it will become second nature to you.  Keep in mind that anything worth having is worth working for, whatever it may be.

If you are currently short on patience, don't worry - it is never too late to master this art.  The human body is amazing.  Our brain can be retrained to create new neural pathways in response to new behaviors.  As you continue to practice patience, you will slowly develop the internal pathways to make it second nature for you.  According to Joan Borysenko, PhD, "The capacity to wait - trading a temporary delight for a more substantial success later - is a core component of emotional intelligence and maturity." [1]
